Athlete of the Week - Angela Saric
That blank spot on the girls basketball banner hanging in the Indian Hills gym is like a hole in Angela Saric’s heart.
The junior forward says seeing the banner - without a league, county or state title to boast of - each time the Braves walk into the gym has served as a powerful motivating force.
The quest to put a title on the banner pushed The Record Female Athlete of the Week to three brilliant performances last week. She had 25 points in the Braves’ 58-42 win over Lakeland on Wednesday. Two days later, she had 21 points and 13 rebounds in a 47-40 victory over Ramapo. The next day, they beat Wayne Hills by 10 and Saric finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
“We walk in there and see the banner blank - it kind of makes us angry no one has done it yet,” she said. “We wanted this for the past three years so it’s a team goal that we just set for ourselves.”
Saric admits she pushes herself at all times. So it wasn’t surprising to those who know her that one single missed foul shot at the end of the victory over Ramapo continued to gnaw at her well after the game.
“There was one second left and we were up by seven,” she said. “I kind of knew we had it in the bag, but I just wanted to end on that last foul shot and I missed it and it made me so mad. But I knew we won it as a team and it didn’t matter if I made it or not. It just kind of set something off in my head.”
